On the occasion of receiving the Katara Award for her novel “Fustuk Abeid”, Samiha Khries speaks with writer Jafar Al-Aqili about her creative journey and perspectives on writing. Poet Dr. Maha Al-Atoum offers a critical intervention on the novel, celebrating a long journey of creative narration, followed by a performance of various musical compositions by violinist Yazan Abu Salim.
"Fustuk Abeid" digs into history, and its narrative space is represented by several places between Sudan, Algeria and Spain. The novel addresses the phenomenon of "slavery," suffered by black people since the end of the 19th century and until the end of the Second World War.
The talk will be in Arabic.
