Maps might appear to be accurate and neutral representations of space and place, but in the process of their creation, they often carry with them a violent history of erasure, glossing over personal and collective experiences, as well as social contexts rooted in place and geography.

Countering Cartography is a research and art project beginning with a talk introducing maps as multi-faceted and multi-layered products of colonialism, and tracing the history of mapping and visual representations.

The talk will be followed by a workshop focusing on tools for deconstructing maps, and offers a liberatory perspective for counter-mapping. The workshop invites writers, researchers, and visual artists to work in groups to create works to be shared with the public at a later stage.

The project will be conducted in Arabic.
