Alois Musil, born of a Czech family in 1868, is one of the pioneers when it comes to early photography in the Arab world. Unique pictures of the surburbs of Amman from the beginning of the 20th century were included in the exhibition “Journey through Desert and Time. Historical Photographs of this Country and its People” at Darat al Funun in 1999. They are printed in this publication, featuring a detailed analysis of the photographer’s motives by Tomas Smetanka.
