Cartographies of Mourning
Fellow Talk: Hala Alnaji

Tuesday 14 July 2026 | 6:30 PM | Beit al Beiruti

How can we document erasure as it unfolds? And how might mourning become a form of resistance amid the ongoing genocide in Gaza?

The doctoral research of architect and visual artist Hala Alnaji, Darat al Funun Fellow 2026, explores methodologies for developing counter-cartographies in response to the ongoing genocide in Gaza. Rejecting the conventions and instruments of traditional cartography, her research brings together textile craft with critical approaches to spatial mapping and mapmaking.

At the centre of the project is stitching, understood both as an analytical method and a collective practice. Stitching becomes an architectural framework through which mourning can take form as an act of spatial resistance against disappearance and erasure.

In this talk, Hala reflects on the development of her research and doctoral project, which brings together design, critical writing, and participatory practices of mapping and knowledge production.

The talk will be held in Arabic. To register, please complete the form here.
