The body of works presented in Oraib Toukan's first solo exhibition relate to memory and historical absence/presence in a region built on déjà vu. The underlying current behind these works is an examination of political promiscuity in our present and an interrogation of a so-called collective memory of the Middle East.

Oraib Toukan is a Jordanian artist who primarily works in photography, video and installation. Known for the socio-political content of her work, she has received two regional awards and various international fellowships and residency placements at prestigious institutes such as the Vermont Studio Center and ART OMI New York. Her works have been included in select group shows, including the Euro-Mediterranean Tunis Biennial and the 2007 Valencia/Sao Paulo Biennial. Recently, she has also produced out-of-gallery public art interventions. Toukan works as an independent photographer, and has taught, lectured in and written on contemporary art practices. She has initiated and managed various experimental arts programs in Jordan.
