On Tuesday 13 May 2014 from 6-8pm, Darat al Funun opens the exhibition ‘In And Out Of The Studio, Photographic Archives from Jordan, Palestine, and Egypt’ in the Beit al Beiruti.
The exhibition features over 200 photographs from various archives of photography studios in Jordan, Palestine, and Egypt. ‘In And Out Of The Studio’ showcases a selection of landscapes, architecture, and studio portraits from the late 19th through the mid-20th century. The images shown on the top floor of the Beit al Beiruti pay tribute to a shared heritage of photographic studio practice that can be traced back to a generation of Armenian photographers coming out of Constantinople and some of the cities in Anatolia at the end of the 19th century. The second part of the exhibition focuses on Jordanian studio photography from the 1920s to the end of the 1960s.
This exhibition was put together by Joseph E. Malikian, Ph.D, and Hrair Sarkissian, with images from The Middle East and Armenian Photograph Archive, The Malikian Collection, and from various collections held by the Arab Image Foundation.
