Darat al Funun rescreens the late Tunisian filmmaker Fadhel al Jaziri's Al-Hadhra (2001).
The Hadhra is a Sufi tradition practiced since the ninth century, bringing together collective recitation of litanies and devotional poetry, and gathering those present into a state of contemplation before the divine. Through the film, Al Jaziri approaches this tradition as a living heritage rather than a static relic.
The screening is held as part of Darat al Funun’s programme in remembrance of Khalid Shoman and in tribute to the film’s late director, Fadhel Al Jaziri, who previously led a Dhikr gathering at Darat al Funun in 2002, marking one year since Khalid Shoman’s passing.
The film will be screened in its original Arabic version with English subtitles.
